Come and discover the Azores with Nicolas! A real forgotten paradise, this archipelago attracts sailors from the world over... Why not you too?
The Azores archipelago is a magnificent place 1500km off the coast of Portugal. Let yourself be charmed by its turquoise waters, volcanoes and natural pools. The untouched landscapes will take your breath away!
During this unforgettable cruise, you'll alternate between sailing and hiking to discover the central islands: Faial, Pico, and Sao Jorge, right in the middle of the Atlantic. All so you can completely disconnect. To find out more about the geography of the Azores, click here.
According to the dates that you reserve your cruise, you'll either leave from the port of Ponta Delgada then disembark in Horta, or the opposite. The stops are the same! Please find this information in the 'Practical Information' section.
First day: Leaving from Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel, Nicolas will welcome you on board around 5pm. Your captain will brief you on the trip. Then you'll be able to explore the town and discover the Antonio Borges and Jose do Canto botanical gardens. Nicolas recommends that you tour this town with the little Lagarta train, before dining on board or on land.
Second day: You'll sail in the direction of Vila Franco do Campo. This is a great chance to try your hand at sailing! After around 1.5 hours of sailing, you'll call into the port of Agua d'Alto to go on a hike. You'll explore the island for 5 hours to reach Lagoa do Fogo. This hike will give you fantastic views over the volcanic lake. A well-deserved swim awaits you in Agua d'Alto in the late afternon. You'll spend the evening on board.
Third day: You'll return to Ponta Delgada to take the exceptional hike around the Sete Cidades crater, lasting around 5.5 hours and accessible for everyone. The Pico da Cruz summit and the park at Lagoa do Canario, a perfect place to relax, are particularly incredible.
Fourth day: You'll head towards the island of Terceira, to Angra de Heroismo. During this approximately 12 hour journey, you'll probably have the chance to sail with dolphins and whales...! There are several of these marine mammals in this area.
Nicolas has a keen knowledge on ecosystems and will explain to you what determines the different ocean, climatic or geological systems. Ask him anything.
Fifth day: Nicolas will suggest a rest morning, a chance for you to visit the capital which is the most beautiful town in the Azores archipelago. In the early afternoon, you'll depart to sail towards the island of Sao Jorge in a voyage that will last around 5 hours. You'll berth in the small port of Calheta in Sao Jorge and enjoy a lovely evening under the stars.
Sixth day: After a relaxed morning where you can enjoy swimming in the sea, Nicolas will give you the opportunity to go on a 3.5 hour hike from Serra do Topo to Faja dos Cubres in the north west of the island. You'll take paths with unique views. In the late afternoon you'll reach the village of Velas after 1.5 hours of sailing.
Seventh day: Your skipper has planned a morning hike of around 4 hours around the north of the island of Sao Jorge: panoramic views, paths for exploration, and swimming... You'll have a picnic during the walk.
Once back on board, you'll sail for around 1.5 hours towards the island of Pico. There you'll make a stop for the night.
Eighth day: Free morning. In the early afternoon, if you wish, you can climb Mount Pico (2351m) accompanied by a local guide. This is an unforgettable hike which requires you to be in good shape!
At the end of the day, you'll sail to the port of Maddalena in Pico for around 1.5 hours.
Ninth day: You'll be able to take a trip to Criaçao Velha to the Gruta das Torres lava cave. During this hike, you'll cross the vineyards which cover the lava fields. You'll also discover Pico's 80 caves. At the end of the afternoon, you'll sail along the coast to watch the dolphins and whales and cross back to Faial, arriving at Horta.
On the last day, you'll have a free morning. In the afternoon, you'll be able to explore the island from Cabeço Gordo. This hike will offer you the most beautiful panoramic views of the entire cruise in the Azores...
You'll leave Nicolas at the end of the day, thinking only about your incredible memories...
If you landed at Ponta Delgada on your way, then there is an inter-island plane to get you back there. Take a look at the 'How to get there' section at the bottom of this page for more information.
