The inhabitants of the Breton coast have sea legs and it doesn’t come out of the blue. There are plenty of islands easily accessible and the winds are always favorable to sailing. Brittany offers an infinite playing field for anybody who would like to start or to upgrade his performances on a sailboat.
Don't be afraid of the weather
We often have a pretty cloudy idea of Brittan. But we forget that from April to September the weather can be really nice too and even when the sky is grey you always have some sun a few times a day. So take your raincoat… but also your bathing suit and some sun block!
Our 5 advices for a navigation in Brittany
Bretons know how to party probably more than anyone, which explains the expression “fest-noz” (party at night, in breton). Brittany stands out as the best place to enjoy music, traditional or modern, with many music festivals : Vieilles Charrues, Transmusicales, the Festival Interceltique,... Besides, multiple music styles are combined perfectly, giving a multicultural stance at this historical region. Plus, these festivals take place all year round. In May, the entire region of Brittany is being celebrated during 10 days. Many activities are scheduled, between concerts, exhibitions, fest-noz - there are more than 150 events to highlight the vitality & modernity of the region. A festive meeting to share & enjoy without moderation!
You cannot say that you know Brittany well unless you have discovered it by sea! In addition to discover idyllic islands (no, it's not a joke), a cruise is the best way to see the landscape from another point of view. Go to enjoy the view on the rugged coastline, the desertic lands, the picturesque harbours and many breathtaking panoramas! Alongside the coast, you will have the chance to follow the numerous lighthouses and discover beautiful bays & authentic ports! For example, enjoy a fabulous view over the port of Saint-Malo & the ramparts of the privateer town, before heading to the magnificent Cap Fréhel. This might also be your starting point to a cruise in the Emerald bay, going through Cancale & Dinard, 2 very charming cities. On a sailboat, don’t miss the Pointe du Raz! But before that, make a stop in the Armorique regional nature park, which clearly worths a stop : beautiful lands, peat bogs, dunes, cliffs - as many shades as the rich landscapes promise. More in the south, the cruise will offer a panorama on the cliffs & wild coasts of Quiberon, before going to Port Navalo, where conviviality is the most important thing.
Travelling around Brittany, it’s also exploring and discovering the numerous islands. Undiscovered coves, white-sand beaches, azure sea, the Breton islands worth the visit! Go explore them from a sailboat. In the North, Bréhat is the cyclist & pedestrian paradise, whereas, a bit further, the discrete Batz please for its wild side. But for a getaway in the Robinson Crusoe style, you have to head to the Virgin island, an uninhabited place. With the turquoise sea & the caves, it looks like paradise. The Iroise islands, at the extreme west, offers a unique show with the high cliffs. For a “Pirate of the Carribean” trip, set sail to the Glenan archipelago : white sand, translucent water, we might think we are in the Seychelles! Let’s not forget about Houat & Hoedic, which are great exotic stops, surrounded by nature with cliffs & white-sand coves. As for Groix, its wild cost combines perfectly with the inhabitants’ conviviality, called “groisillons”. Such a pleasant place to live! At Belle-Ile, let you immerse into the local culture with a bicycle ride throughout the island. The biggest Breton island will please you with its colourful towns, the authentic port of Sauzon, the rough sea and the sheer cliffs.
When it is snack time and you are as hungry as a bear, the delicious breton sweets are always here to please you, especially the famous salted butter caramel crepe. With a glass of cider, there is nothing better! However, we should not forget the Kouign Amann, a very famous Breton cake, or seafood, present in the vast majority of local dishes. An advise : make a stop in the picturesque port of Cancale to eat the delicious local oysters, considered as the best of the Breton shoreline. Should we say crepe or pancake (galette in French)? There is a huge debate around this matter. Actually, it all depends on where you are in Brittany. In the North, we call this galette whereas in the South, it’s all about crepe. Either way, we gladly eat one of those delights!
Brittany is also a feeric land, where many beautiful celtic legends were born. You just need to put a foot in the Broceliande forest to be aware of that! The Broceliande myth is far from being the only one. Batz island, as an example, would have been terrorized by a dragon a long time ago. There would be only one mark of its passage: the print of its claw in the rock before it was pushed into the ocean. While cruising in Douarnenez Bay, keep your eyes peeled to try to see the sunken city of Ys, one of the most famous myths in Brittany. You’ve got it, Brittany is full of legends which make us take an imaginary travel. You too, like Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, set out in quest for the Holy Grail on your holidays! On the way, you might meet one or two korrigans, some wacky goblins.
