The skipper

Embark with ETIENNE - Destination Azores for a sailing cruise

What is your motto ?

To sail seriously without ever taking myself too seriously, to share what I know, to learn more every day, and to make every sea outing a human as well as a maritime adventure.

How did you come to do this job?

I met the sea at the age of 18, almost by chance, during a year of civic service. It wasn't long before I became fully immersed in it, becoming a cruise instructor. What was supposed to be a temporary experience became an obvious one: sailing, transmitting and living as part of a crew would be part of my daily life.

What people say about you?

I'm often described as calm and patient when cruising. I like to take the time to explain, reassure and let everyone find their place on board. I'm also said to be curious, as much about the sea as about my surroundings: the fauna, the flora, the landscapes... and above all, the people I sail with.

To know about you, apart from your job?

I love physical activities as much as board games. I regularly practice apnea and spearfishing, and can give an initiation with my level 4 AIDA.

Life on a journey

Your best memory ?

My best memory is not a record or a specific destination, but a shared moment: seeing a novice crew member take the helm for the first time, understanding the wind, feeling the boat respond, and smiling. These moments sum up everything I love about sailing.

For you, what is a successful sea trip?

Creating a climate of trust. When everyone feels at ease, listened to and involved, the cruise becomes fluid and natural. I always try to adapt my guidance to the level and expectations of the crew, so that the experience is both formative, lively and enjoyable.

Your style of practice?

I like to sail in an active but considered way. For me, a good tack is one where everyone understands what's going on, participates in the maneuvering and gains confidence, while paying real attention to the safety and comfort of the crew. I attach great importance to the rhythm on board, anticipation and observation of the environment.
