The skipper

Go on a one-day training course with Tom, a professional skipper, who left his native Ireland for Brittany!

What is your motto ?

Live slow, sail fast!

How did you come to do this job?

I started to learn how to sail from a very young age in Ireland. I then worked as an instructor and head of the Glénans sailing school (Ireland, France, the Caribbean), before becoming self-employed. Currently a skipper in a 6.50 for the Mini Transat 2017.

What people say about you?

To this day I have only had good feedback.

To know about you, apart from your job?

With there not being a lot of space on a 6.50 I try to keep a low profile so that the trainee feels totally autonomous and gets a real taste of what life on an offshore speed boat.

Life on a journey

Your best memory ?

When I saw a whale jump in front of my eyes 10 metres from the boat in the middle of the Atlantic

For you, what is a successful sea trip?

When trainees ask me with a big smile on their faces: "When are we going to the that again?"

Your style of practice?

Active, sporty and fast. I try to work on the sensations and manoeuvres on board. For me these two points are the most interesting things to do on this boat.
