The skipper

Meet Jean, skipper and sailing instructor in Corsica and the Côte d'Azur. Jean has been teaching people how to sail for 20 years. He is still every bit as enthusiastic as ever to embark voyagers to discover, Corsica and the Côte d'Azur, regions that he knows and loves. Jean, always calm and instructive, will introduce you to the special rhythm of life at sea, and guide you towards some of the most untouched spots of natural beauty around.

What is your motto ?

« Un café d'abord ! ». Of course. Even at sea, it’s important to start the day right!

How did you come to do this job?

My father had a little 7-metre sailing boat in the Bandol area. I renovated it and prepared it to sail as far as possible for as long as possible. That was 30 years ago. After practicing coastal navigation from San Remo to Spain I decide that the best way to become a serious amateur sailor was to become a serious sail instructor. I got some qualifications, became a small boat instructor and started teaching in clubs. At the same time I bought a bigger sailing boat and honed my skills which took to me places ever farther away. It was magical! I went back to class to obtain a state instructor’s qualification and bought an even bigger boat to go even farther, for even longer. After taking a sports education course in sailing I spent several years running the Borgo maritime base. I became a trainer and examiner for the Sea Scouts, a school sailing instructor, and a boat restorer in Marseille. I ran several sailing schools, then created my own.

What people say about you?

Reassuring, instructive, organised, calm… well, at least the ones I didn’t throw overboard said that!

To know about you, apart from your job?

I’m an enthusiast for sailing. But I’m just as enthusiastic about theatre and saxophone!

Life on a journey

Your best memory ?

It was during my first solo crossing to Corsica when the sun first rose behind the island and the silhouette seemed to be on fire. It was incredibly beautiful and moving. It was my reward.

For you, what is a successful sea trip?

A success is when people start to take their time to discover what is around them, and discover the pleasure of sliding silently over the water. And when they learn that they can live without TV.

Your style of practice?

Sailing is a life style. I like to go alone for several months... The rythme on the see is very different than on earth...
