Your cruise
Looking for a sailing course this winter? Hoist the sails in the Canaries.
At this time of year, the climate is mild and the winds are ideal for sailing. During the course, you'll be supervised by a professional skipper, and together you'll combine coastal sailing, learning and sightseeing.
This sailing course is recommended for beginners to intermediate levels.
Your possible stops during this cruise
Below is a sample itinerary for your sailing course in the Canaries from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura and La Graciosa.
The itinerary is subject to weather conditions.
Your professional skipper will meet you on Saturday morning at 10:00 am at the Lanzarote marina in the town of Arrecife to embark. You'll meet the crew and settle aboard the yacht. But before you set sail, you'll go shopping under the skipper's expert guidance, as maritime tradition dictates that the skipper must be fed by the crew. And after a briefing on the rules of life and safety on board, you'll hoist the sails for a week's sailing course.
Program:
You'll be supervised by a professional skipper, and together you'll combine coastal sailing with a tour of the Canary Islands. During the winter period (October to February), the wind in the region is steady with northeasterly trade winds, ideal for sailing.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of the points you'll need to discuss with your skipper during your week-long sailing course:
- Steering: sail according to points of sail / trajectory with the helm / following a course or alignment / identifying your point of sail / coordinating actions...
- Maneuvers: tacking / gybing / harbor maneuvers / reefing / sail changes...
- Navigation: find your bearings on a map / plan and follow a route...
- Safety: awareness / warning procedures...
- Technology: knots / engine checks...
- Shipboard organization: marine vocabulary / organizing watches...
- Marine sense: tides / wind strength / sea state...
And much more, so don't hesitate to ask!
When it comes to ports of call, the Canaries offer lunar landscapes. Indeed, this volcanic archipelago is full of surprises. On the island of Lanzarote alone, you'll discover both white and black sand beaches, but they all share one thing in common: they're always bordered by crystal-clear water!
On the outskirts of Lanzarote, you can discover two other jewels: Fuerteventura to the south and La Graciosa to the north. Both offer numerous bays sheltered from the prevailing winds, perfect for a break at anchor.
If you stop off at La Graciosa, don't miss Playa Francesa, with its white sandy beach and turquoise waters, a paradise for all swimmers (you also need to know how to take a few breaks during a sailing course, especially when faced with the Canary landscapes).
Return to the original Lanzarote marina on Friday around 5:00 pm.
please note: this sailing course is open to all levels, from beginners to intermediates. And if you'd like to take several sailing courses in a row, please contact us (prices are on a sliding scale).
PS: One of our sailing traditions is to bring one of our local culinary specialties to share with the crew. Please feel free to join in.
